Ben offers schooling for your horse to develop it’s training, for preparation of a competition or to keep it in exercise. The session will generally last 45 minutes to 1 hour and it can be done either whilst you are there or away.
Ben will discuss with you what your horse is doing and what your working towards to get the most out of the session. This is best weekly or fortnightly to keep the horse together. It can also be done to continue the horses work during your holiday.
If preparing for a competition, Ben will ride to assess the horse to make sure that it can do the required movements or jump the correct height. Then he will develop the technique of the horse to give it the experience needed for the competition. This work can then be continued through lessons to give you the correct feel as a rider and what is required for the competition or training.
Ben also exercises horses. Personally he prefers to do this in a school to develop fitness and educate the horse at the same time. He can do speed tests and gallops, as well as interval training when needed for competition fitness
Ben can also school the horses from the ground using lunging and long reining. This is sometimes needed if the horses balance is not correct and self carriage is being developed.
These techniques are very useful and have great benefit to the horse and trainer. It allows the trainer to see from the ground where the problem is and can give the horse a correct feel and enables the horse to work without the interference of the rider.
Long reining is a very good way to encourage longitudinal stretch from the horse if it is coming back into work. Also to regain lightness into the contact and create obedience through the contact.
